THY to seek compensation from Boeing due to defect
Turkish Airlines (THY) is expected to request compensation from Boeing after an emergency landing on Monday due to a defect in the pressurization system.
On a flight from Shanghai to İstanbul, the cabin pressure decreased unexpectedly. During the event, the passengers panicked and oxygen masks dropped from the compartments above the seats. The plane executed an emergency landing in Ankara from where passengers were transferred to İstanbul.
THY commented on the issue, saying it resulted from the malfunctioning of a valve in the cabinet’s pressurization system. Officials noted that the Boeing 777-300ER was purchased in February and said THY will request compensation from Boeing since the plane is still under warranty.
During the flight, the 270 passengers had to wear oxygen masks for 40 minutes before the emergency landing in Ankara. The malfunction was fixed in the THY aerodrome after landing, and the aircraft was put back on the schedule for the İstanbul-Dubai flight on the same day.
Commenting on the event, Hakan Sepetçi, one of the passengers, said that “the cabin crew was very professional and prevented people from becoming too agitated. The pilot reassured us and we felt calmer.”
